Bead Fest Dreams

I have officially begun dreaming about beads, and Bead Fest.  I have had the dreams that I showed up and forgot my beads, or that no one bought them.  Then I awake to the panic of unfinished beads everywhere!  LOL.  This is my life right now.

Eat, take care of kids, make beads, sleep (a little), repeat.

But I can't wait.  And I am quite happy with what I am making.

Finally done painting and sealing all the polymer beads.

So that feels like progress!  I also started putting these loose beads

Into sets

I stayed up late polishing all my bronze, so that I could seal it this morning.  Before polishing......

After polishing

First hiccup this morning- the bronze oxidized more over night, and I need to re-buff them again before sealing.  *sigh*

Second hiccup was when I opened the kiln- which should have been my last kiln load- and found all my copper poppies broken.  I guess I will try to squeeze in one more load, because I really wanted to have these for Bead Fest.

I am not the only one who has suffered the loss of broken beads in this madness that is Bead Fest prep.  It's part of the game.  So I will drink my coffee, and enjoy this fall like weather we are having here in Pa.  I will string my sets, and make more copper poppies, and finish the metal work that is needed for my crazy urchin beads. (below)

Then I will make a sample for the kits Genea and I have been working on and write the instructions.

After those things are done, its just little stuff like pricing each bead, and packing stuff for the show.

Two full studio days would be good, but with summer coming to a close for the kids, there is much to get done around here.

School starting is always bittersweet for me.  I love the quiet time when they go back, but I do miss them.  I worry for them.  We have some big changes this year, Aiden goes to the middle school and Collin starts full day- first grade.  Julia goes into third, which is a pretty challenging year from what I remember with Aiden.  I hope they adjust quickly and make friends and love their teachers.  That's all I want for them.  To enjoy school, so learning comes easily.

So that is my ramble- it's what's going on around here.  Can't wait to see my friends, and sell my wares, and see all my friends art in person in one week.

If you are coming to Bead Fest- make sure to ask about the gathering Saturday night, with food, wine and giveways- hosted by Melinda Orr of Artisan Whimsy and Creative Bead Chat.  It's a great time!

The Art of Design, Beads in the Shop and A Giveaway!!!

I am finally listing beads in the shop!  I will be listing all day today, and most likely a little bit on Monday as well.  There are no reserves, and no custom orders.  I am sorry.  If you want to purchase more then one item, just use coupon code freeshipbb on any purchase AFTER YOUR INITIAL PURCHASE (you must pay shipping on your first purchase) so that you don't rack up shipping charges that need to be refunded.  I will ship Monday after I am done listing.

I know in my production of all these beads, I showed a lot of process shots, but I never really got a chance to talk about the art of designing them.  I am inspired by many things, and ideas come from everywhere, often evolving along the way.

My newest additions this year were my bird skulls, trilobites and skeleton hearts.

My entire theme of beads this year is "fossils, bones, ancient".  I wanted things to look like specimens from a museum.

The skeleton hearts were quite an evolution.

I first fell in love with these hearts from Odd Designs on etsy.  I thought I could use them as toggles, since they had a larger hole.  so I bought two of them.  I will most likely try to find a stick pearl to use for a toggle with them.

Anyhow, I wanted to make some clasp focals this year, and thought hearts may work, so I tried to make some in polymer and bronze- in the shape of a heart, but organic, and rustic.  Well, that fell right by the wayside, because as soon as I started to form them, they began to look like bone, skeletons.  The holes became large and exaggerated, to make them look hollow, symbolic.  I added organic textures with sea urchin and other earthy stamps.  So they quickly evovled to skeleton hearts.

Skeleton- like bone, hollow, and stripped of all flesh.  I didn't try to be morbid, but - I think hearts are resiliant.  I think  the symbol has been "pretty" for too long.  I really believe more of us can relate to the bare bones, tough, surviving interior of the heart.  (yeah, don't go all bio on my, I am quite aware there is no bone in an actual heart...lol)

So they were born, and they evovled and they evolve still.  Each and every one is completely handformed.  I use NO heart stamps, for it loses its organic nature if you do.  So no two will ever be alike.

and then they even evolved into my Broken Hearts.  You get a little peek into the madness that is my designing brain today.  I take these shapes and designs I love, and keep growing them, changing them, until my brain says they are done.

Another new item this year, was my trilobite.  Last year I made ammonites, and I wanted to add more fossils to the collection.  So when Diana of Suburban Girl Studio did Trilobites in ceramic, I asked if she would mind if I did them in metal clay.  I wanted to make sure I wasn't stepping on her toes.  (since we all work in the same social circles, I think its important to show each other respect.)

Here are Diana's (adorable, right?)

She said go for it.  So I bought some fossils, and made some molds and went to town.  I have made both simple trilobite designs, and more complex designs, most of which, went right into jewlery.

Copper Clay Pendant
sold

Polymer Steampunk Trilobite with Metal Balls
 sold

Trilobite Fossil Heart with Metal Ball Pin Wings

 sold

My favorite, trilobites with rivets and layers!!!

necklace is not for sale, sorry

will be listed later today

My brain is nuts sometimes, I always take a design that would be simple, and much much easier to produce and over complicate it!  These are very time consuming, with the metal work of the backing, and all the process of the metal clay, and then rivets, or ball pins as connection as well.  However, I can't do it any other way.  I need some of both, simple and complex.  My brain just keeps working a design until I am done with it, and then I move on.

I know you saw my bird skulls earlier in the year. I made some matching bones and such to create sets.  These just make me happy.  I love how much they remind me of finding little animal skulls when playing in the woods growing up (we had owls, so we'd find this kind of stuff often).  Each skull and bone bead is totally handsculpted, again, for that natural organic effect.

Anyway, I just wanted to share some of the thought, love and design that goes into my pieces.  I don't think of them as just beads, I make little pieces of art.  I spent most of my life drawing and painting.  Making my own molds has allowed me to "draw" some really original designs this year, like these eyes

and my sugar skulls

will be listed later today

and painting each polymer bead by hand, allows me to play with and create in a medium I have always loved- paint!  I love finding endless combonations and layered effects to create new undertones, and effects on my beads.  Each one is painted in layers and layers to create depth, the same as I would do in a painting.

I do hope you will stop by the shop and check out my new stuff, there is so much more then what I shared today, but those are the ones that really spoke to me this year.  Thanks for letting me share some of my design process with you.  Design is what I love about creating.....its what drives me, its what makes me love what I do.....and it can be what endlessly torments me, but I wouldn't change it for the world!

Blurry Week...Exciting Stuff.....

Well, this week has been a blur!  Halloween was snowy on the east coast for the first time in my lifetime!  So many power outages, trees down, absolutely crazy!

My Aiden was sick, just a cold, but opted not to trick or treat.  We share all the goods anyway.  Here were my little ones................
a snow princess and a viking.  Homemade snow princess outfit is an old flower girl dress that was given to us, white gloves and hat with a tiara from her princess collection, and the viking is sisters jean jacket turned inside out to reveal the fur, sisters ugg boots, pirate hand hook from previous years, and viking hat made from tin foil and masking tape.  I loved it.  So fun to make your own costumes.

That was Monday- on sunday and monday we had some house guests that were displaced due to the power outages (my mom and poppop).  It was very nice to have some time with Poppop, and he and the kids had a blast!

Then Tuesday I spent most of the day in the ER with Aiden....asthma out of control.  He's ok.  He just needs that extra strong neb now and again.  I just wish he didn't have to suffer with it.  But its all he's known, so he's a trooper about it.

Yesterday was Halloween withdrawl craziness in my house, with Aiden home and collin tired, it was chaos.

I did begin the patina process on my new copper clay pieces, made copper leaves and Loop T Loops for the shop and took some pics.
Here are some of my new pendants I made from the Antique Bible molds I made (in copper clay).  Here are a couple (check my Artisan Accents shop this weekend for the listings...
dragon fly- each one has little hidden crosses in the artwork (since they are from an antiqued tooled leather Bible cover)
LOVE this one and heart key with a cross
dragonfly with multi-holes for dangles
drgonfly tri-connector
heart and cross bird pendant
and last but not least, this beautiful star of david pendant

Today I am kicking butt and catching up.

NOW, for the exciting news part.

Stop by here tomorrow to find out how you can be part of the biggest art bead swap, chain, giveaway thing EVER!  (ok, maybe not ever, but maybe)  Its awesome and fun and being held by Love My Art Jewelry.

Here is a sneak peek.......

Sale Extended for the Snow Day

I am going to leave my codes for the earlybird sale active for one more day.  My mind is blown by the fact we are having a White Halloween here in the east.  Its crazy.  My poor trees still have pretty yellow leaves on them.

Anyway- use code earlybird15 in either my jewelry store or my components shop to save 15% plus you get a free gift with every order.  I will be adding some more jewelry throughout the day.

I am kinda thankful for a day inside thought, because I tried using copper clay for the first time.  I usually do bronze, but I am having trouble getting the bronze to solder to things after firing, so I thought the copper would work better.  Well- the verdict is in, and I like it very much.  It think its much easier to work with then the bronze.  It fired nicely, only downside, it shrinks WAY more then the bronze.  I will just have to figure for that next time.  Here is the first batch right outta the carbon.

I did mess up pretty big time and lost some pieces.  I got new carbon, threw my pieces in it and fired up the kiln.  At about 800 degrees I remembered that I hadn't primed the carbon to burn off impurities and mositure.  So I turned it off and let it cool.  I lost a few pieces, I guess the moisture got them and they broke???  My own fault anyway.

I also found these little guys in the bottom of my firing..............wasn't sure what they were, then I realized they were my tiny moon faces....one still had the shape, barely.  I guess I melted them.  They were pretty tiny, so I will put them in the middle next time, and cool the firing a few degrees to allow for variance.  Thankfully they were the only ones that melted.  Anyhow, I love how they look, like little metal druzy's or something:)  Happy accident!

I am wondering if I melt more if they will get that green shimmer?  Hmmmm................................

Now I am off to take advantage of this snow day and get some things made....pack up my sale orders and pair them with special gifts, and watch the kids play in the slushy snow!

Happy White Halloween weekend everyone!  Stay warm and safe!
