Well, the studio is done. I just need to put it back together today.
Here is a photo progression of the events.
messy over crowded studio
empty with carpet still in tact
carpet is out
my super handy hubs measuring (this is what he does professionally)
framing
framing
first layer of plywood
topped with finished plywood- smooth oak
edged with trim
a little mineral oil on the surface
moved in
then decided to paint the sub floor- grey base, black doodles
painted the framing of the table black too, to hide the cheap lumber
~~~~~~~~
Now I am just waiting for it to thoroughly dry before moving the rest in.
My hubs did an amzing job building my desks, they are open underneath, which was important to me, but also SUPER sturdy. He does NOT mess around. That man builds things to last. If a tornado ever hits, I am ducking under these babies.
The painting of the floor was such an amazing zen experience. I have always loved to paint (the moon painting over my workbench is one of mine) and painting on this scale, with endless free form, no thought, nothing is wrong, possibilites, just freed my mind. It was meditative, and I was able to enjoy it with my entire being. You can read more about that experience tomorrow (friday) at Love My Art Jewlery.
So that is it. What a feeling of joy and relief. I am almost in shock. I now have a beautiful and functional place to create. I have wanted this for soooooooooo long. And thanks to the fact my hubs is a carpenter, it cost next to nothing. He used lumber and trim he had, I just had to buy the finished plywood, a new light for the room (cause it was so very very dark in there) and paint. He didn't even charge me labor ......lol. He built it just the way I wanted, even though I changed it 20x, even as he was building it. I am sure I am on his difficult customer list now, but thats ok. It's perfect, so it was worth it.
So freaking awesome! I love that your hubby did this for you. I have a hubby that will move stuff in for me. ;-) I am trying to get my space back to functioning again. And let me reiterate how great your floor is! It is so personal and inspiring. I am sure those motifs will creep into your work as well! Enjoy the day, Miss Staci! Erin
ReplyDeleteI am so blessed. He is such a good carpenter!
DeleteWOOHOO! LOVE YOUR FLOOR! and those work benches are bad ass! I'm definitely bookmarking that for when I need to build some!!!!
ReplyDeletei redesigned it a ton of times! So take your time planning yours :) I couldn't picture where everything needed to be, ect. worked out great, hubs helped a lot with the planning. he is so organized, not my strong suit.
DeleteFabulous!!!!! It looks great!
ReplyDeleteThanks- I love it. I almost cried a couple of times. I've always wanted this, and can't believe we did it for under $200- for everything, even a barstool chair and new light. so happy.
DeleteThe floor is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI love it too. It will be my motivation to keep it clear of piles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DeleteSooooo...do you lend him out? I am jealous!! Our yard looks amazing because my hubby loves working outdoors, but put a hammer in his hand? Too dangerous!
ReplyDeleteWell- you can hire him, but he doesn't travel too far! LOL!
DeleteI love how the grey undercoat is slightly mottled and time worn. I am just loving this expressive artistic talent you have. You have inspired me to dig into some texture mats that I've been wanting to carve but don't know where to start. The design is so YOU. Your logo is awesome right there on the floor too. It's official. It's like how they stuck that flag on the moon...beautiful moon painting by the way. Very earthy and organic. LOVE IT!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat job hubs! That workbench is some quality stuff right there!I love this studio!
I love that- my flag on the moon. I wanted my heart with wings front and center, but still in the mix. :) I love it too. I have gone through extremely giddy to almost tears, can't believe its all mine.
DeleteWhat an awesome work space you now have Staci! Your hubs is talented with a hammer and you are amazingly talented in so many creative ways. LOVE the floor!
ReplyDeleteThank you- the floor was fun. now I want to paint everything!
DeleteI love your new space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteme too- I'd like to have a girls night and a little open studio, but its too small for too many people! oh well
DeleteOh so happy for you, Staci! A new functional, artsy workspace is a very special gift and a wonder to behold! Enjoy, enjoy!
ReplyDeleteit will have me very inspired!
DeleteWhat a beautiful new work space! And I love the floor too, you did a great job on it. Funnily, your 'before' picture looks just like my beading area, even down to the file folders in a box. (I think that's what I see in the pic)
ReplyDeleteI've always loved a man in a tool belt :) Your space looks fabulous! Can't wait to see the work that comes out of it.
ReplyDeleteHi Staci! I am now following your blog - from LMAJ blog. This is very inspiring!!! I am getting ready to redo a room in my house for a full size studio - all by myself however. Thanks for the inspiration and loved your painting process! :)
ReplyDeleteOh have fun! I really enjoyed making this just how I wanted. I should have done it right off the bat when I took over this room, but we didn't have time, and hubs didn't want to rip up the carpet. Now, years later, as my tool collection grew, and the room did not, and the rug got ruined, hubs was totally on board. I hope i can keep it somewhat organized now. Thanks for following, let me know how your remodel goes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DeleteOh, and my advice, plan for more stuff then you have now, cause when you have your own space, you will fill it.........and then some
DeleteTHAT IS AWE-SOME.
ReplyDeleteYou're the man - Justin. Staci - how exciting for you. This is great.........
Come do my (sewing) room now? Next???
lol.
oh my gosh- just jumped over here bc i loved your painted floor on the other blog- you worked HARD organizing and redo-ing your studio space. that must feel great. very inspiring. thx.
